Financing a used car without a perfect credit score
Bad credit doesn't mean no car — it means a different conversation. Here's how in-house financing actually works, and what to expect on the rate.
If your credit isn't perfect, you already know it. What you may not know is that dealership in-house financing is built for exactly your situation, and the rate difference is usually smaller than people think.
Here's the math. A prime borrower — 720+ — might get a 6.5% rate on a used car through a bank. A credit-challenged borrower — 580 to 650 — might get 11 to 14% through a subprime lender. That spread, over a 60-month term on a $25,000 vehicle, works out to roughly $130 a month. Painful, but not catastrophic, and it rebuilds your score if you pay on time.
The conversation is different at a dealership that finances in-house, like Nova. We make the decision locally, the same day, against a wider set of criteria than a bank will consider. Job stability, residence history, down payment, and the vehicle itself all carry weight — not just the number on a credit report. A full-time job for three years at the same employer counts for more than a single missed payment from five years ago.
Three things will move your rate down the most: a larger down payment (every 10% down shaves roughly a point off the rate), a shorter term (a 36-month term rates noticeably better than 72), and a co-signer with stronger credit. If you can put 20% down on a 48-month term with a parent or partner as co-signer, you'll typically land in the same rate band as a prime borrower, even with a 620 score. The trade-off is that the co-signer is on the hook if you can't pay, so make sure that conversation happens before the paperwork does.
The biggest mistake we see is people waiting. Every month you delay a car purchase to "fix your credit first" is a month you're losing. A reliable vehicle gets you to work, gets your kid to school, lets you take a job that's slightly farther but pays better. The interest rate on a financed car is cheaper than a rideshare habit, an unreliable beater that needs monthly repairs, or a missed shift that costs you a promotion. Run the numbers honestly.
